Match Preview v Airdrie (H) - 13th Aug 22

Aug 12 2022 14:13

We are back home tomorrow as we welcome Airdrie to Palmerston for our latest league game.

The visitors sit top of the table with maximum points after starting with two positive results. They opened their campaign with a 2-0 away victory at Peterhead and followed it up with a convincing 4-0 home win against Falkirk last weekend.

The last time the two sides faced each other was in Dumfries last year when The Diamonds visited in the group stages of the Premier Sports Cup in July. Ruben Soares Junior added to Ally Roy’s hat-trick in a comfortable 4 – 1 home win. Gabby McGill scoring a late consolation for the visitors on the day.

This weekend’s match sees a bit of a reunion for some players, Rico Quitongo and Max Currie wore the red and white of Airdrie last season before joining former Diamond Paul McKay at Palmerston. While there are six former Queens players within the travelling squad. Rhys McCabe is now player manager, assisted by previous Queens captain Callum Fordyce. They are joined by goal-keepers David Hutton and Josh Rae as well as Adam Frizzell and Salim Kouider Aissa who have all previously played for us.

Any friendship will go out the window between three o’clock and quarter to five though as we aim to pick up our first league win of the season.

Ahead of the game manager Wullie Gibson said “Following a disappointing last home game we headed to Montrose last week looking for a reaction. The players know they let themselves and the fans down against Clyde, so I was proud of the players at Links Park as they showed character.

It was a game that lacked quality from both sides, but we showed we can keep it tight and a clean sheet and a point away from home at a tough venue is a positive and something to build on. We just needed a bit more cutting edge but overall, a draw was probably fair.

It will be another tough game this week against an Airdrie side who will be confident after back-to-back wins, but we need to start winning our home games. We can’t put pressure on ourselves and make it an issue, but we know our home results have to improve.

We are starting to get players back which is good, but we have to build them up, so we don’t have recurring problems which takes a bit of time.

The crowd against Clyde was decent so hopefully we can maintain or improve on those numbers. We know we owe our fans a performance so once again thank you for your continued support and keep backing the players”.

As far as we are aware there are no ongoing roadworks currently around Dumfries that may affect travel times to Palmerston Park. Fans should check the Traffic Scotland website at http://trafficscotland.org/index.aspx for confirmation of any delays.

Car parking will be available to all spectators within the Queen of the South Arena car park. It is suggested that buses/minibuses drop off their passengers in Terregles St/King Street and thereafter park on College Mains road just off the roundabout with the A76 on the town bypass (adjacent to Curry’s/PC World, as the other side at Aldi is the access road to the ambulance depot and is extremely busy). Pick up should be the same location as drop off. Supporters’ buses including minibuses will not be allowed to park in the Arena car park.

The catering outlets within the supporter’s areas of the ground will also be open for use. And the bar under the Alpha Solway stand will be open to both sets of supporters’ pre-match.

QOS have adopted a robust and thorough search policy for spectators entering the ground to ensure that ground rules and regulations are strictly adhered to, especially in relation to pyrotechnic devices and controlled containers. We would like to remind supporters that letting off smoke devices is a criminal offence, and anyone found doing so will be referred to Police Scotland which may result in a custodial sentence. Not only is it against the law, it is extremely dangerous and a health hazard to other spectators. All bags will be searched and spectators presenting themselves for entry may also be subject to search. Spectators who refuse to be searched by stewards will be denied entry to the ground.

Palmerston Park is a non-smoking venue, this includes e cigarettes and other such devices. Stewards are empowered to eject spectators who disobey these rules. No persons will be admitted to the ground who are deemed to be under the influence of alcohol.

Supporters should note that due to a UEFA ruling we are no longer providing a stream of matches this season.

The club shop located in the Arena will be open from 1300 until kick off where you can purchase our club merchandise. Including our new home and away kits.

Tomorrow’s match kicks off at 3 pm.
