Match Preview v Morton - 26th Nov 22

Nov 25 2022 11:00

We have a break from the league this weekend as we get our Scottish Cup campaign underway with a trip to Morton.

The hosts are going well in the Championship, sitting second, one point behind leaders Ayr United with eight wins from their 16 games so far. Five of those victories have been at home. In their other games at Cappielow this season they have drawn once and lost two. In the eight games at home, they’ve scored 15 and conceded five.

We were of course in the same league last season and with a SPFL Trust Trophy cup tie also in the mix, we faced each other five times during the 2021/22 campaign. Queens came out top on three occasions, winning 3-2 at Cappielow in August as well as a 2-1 win in the cup and a 3-0 victory in the league the last time we played each other in March. Max Johnstone, Aidan Fitzpatrick and Ruari Paton were on target that day for us. The other games ended in a goal-less draw in October and a 2-1 victory for Morton the last time we visited Greenock, back in February. A certain Gavin Reilly scored with ten minutes to go with Cameron Blues adding a second a minute later as they came from behind to cancel out Euan East’s opening goal.

Ahead of the trip this weekend, Manager Wullie Gibson said “We know that it will be a tough challenge as Dougie Imrie has got them playing well. They won’t be an easy side to play, and we will need to be up for a battle. But we take confidence from the performance and result last week against Montrose. With the exception of Rico’s red card, it was a pleasing afternoon, scoring four goals and keeping a clean sheet.

The game against Morton is a one-off game so we will go with a positive mind set and the belief that we can get a result. The Scottish Cup has financial implications for everyone so every club wants a cup run and to go as far as they can in the competition, we’re no different, we want to be in the next round”.
