Defeats for the Academy sides

Mar 22 2026 17:41

It was a disappointing weekend for the academy sides with both the 17s and 19s losing their games.

The 17s travelled to Port Glasgow to face Greenock Morton in their final fixture before the league split and they struggled to get into any flow in the first half although, Dylan Craig dis hit the post and William Salfenmoser had a shot from close range blocked. With the hosts scoring with a free header from a corner, they held a one goal lead at the break.

Queens were better in the second half forcing their opponents into more errors and taking better control on the ball. They again created chances but didn’t take them and with the game finely balanced, Morton scored two quick goals to race into a 3-0 lead. The visitors tried to get back into the game with Lucas Jones hitting the post from a free kick but it wasn’t until the final minutes that they scored when Jones was fouled and Salfenmoser, converted the penalty. However the home side also scored a late goal to win by four goals to one.

Full time: Morton 4 Queens 1

Coach Ross Newlands said “The boys are disappointed with themselves in the way they lost the game, as they know the four goals were all avoidable.”

Meanwhile the U19s lost their game away to Elgin City. Josh Kelly scored Queens’ only goal in a 2-1 defeat.

Both sides have finished in the bottom half of their respective leagues and have a week to prepare for their post split fixtures.
