The youngest of our sides, the u17s travelled to Port Glasgow last night (Friday) for a CAS League Match against Greenock Morton. Going into the game, the hosts sat second in the table, so the players knew the task ahead.

The game started quite open, with both sides creating chances and putting the respective defences under pressure. It was the home side who opened the scoring midway through the half when the striker was allowed to turn and play in the winger who finished well. This didn't deter Queens from continuing to put pressure on and they could have felt disappointed going in at the break one down.

The second half started much like the first. However, it was Queens who capitalised on their chances. A fine free-flowing move from Wykes, Hunter and Pike was cut back to Hunter whose shot was parried by the home goalie and Ben Walden headed home to level the match. Queens were on top but were dealt a blow when some loose play resulted in a Morton corner; the corner was headed home at the back post to restore the lead. As Queens pushed for a late equaliser, Morton rounded off the scoring with a great finish into the top corner.

Coach Ross Newland said “We knew before the game how good Morton could be, so it's testament to the boys that they went toe-to-toe with them for 90 mins. On another night, this scoreline could easily have been different. We were caught out by fine margins, and they punished our mistakes, but we couldn’t do the same. The boys will have learned a lot from the game and should be proud of their performance.”

 Next week the u17s have a 'home' match v Inverness which will be played at a neutral venue.
